Our Services

Racetrack Vets offer a comprehensive range of equine veterinary services for horses of all shapes and sizes.

Our experienced equine veterinarians have a wide range of medical and surgical skills to treat your horses both on or a clinic referral.

Whilst a majority of our work is in the racing industry, we cater to all equine needs including  all pleasure and performance horses.

Digital Radiography

X-rays are a valuable asset and key tool in diagnosing a multitude of problems in horses.

Conduct survey X-rays in weanling and mature horses, to ensure correct management and results , whether on the racetrack , in the sales ring or in the arena.

Video Endoscopy & Gastroscopy

Our endoscopy procedure is that which involves passing a flexible fibreoptic endoscope through the horse’s nostril and down the nasal passage.This allows visual and video of larynx, guttural pouches and trachea.This can be used to identify a multitude of issues.

These include chronic coughing, nasal discharge. Our vets also use this too to identify abnormal function and investigate respiratory noise. Also investigating poor performance / swelling of the face or throat region.

Pre-Purchase Vetting

Pre-purchase examinations and reports for all intended purposes. This includes for Racing, Ready to Run or Equestrian purpose.

We conduct extensive pre sale vettings for Hong Kong Jockey Club, as well as all exports to China, Malaysia, Indonesia, including all Xray and Scope requisites. 

We also offer insurance examinations and reports  (including mortality and loss of use)

Yearling Sale Servies

We provide all pre sale veterinary requirements for all Australian sales series including endoscopic reports and sales    X-rays. Our vets are present at all major sales across Australia and New Zealand , conducting Xray Repository reports and physical exams  

Laboratory /Pharmacy

Our laboratory can conduct routine and pre-race blood testing, endocrine testing (Cushings disease), hormone testing, faecal egg counts, export bloods,  as well as well as swab samples identifying a variety of bacterial cultures, antibiotic sensitivity .

We also carry a broad range of Pharmaceutical products for short and long term treatment of your horse.

Lamness Exam

Initial lameness exams and investigation are a vital tool in finding and managing the cause of an abnormal gait ,which can be pain induced or mechanical in nature.

Early intervention and management ,including joint medication can  intern lead to a highly successful career .

Shockwave Treatment

A non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic pulses to stimulate healing in musculoskeletal conditions .

 

Castrations

We conduct all geldings of all breeds, on farm under a general anaesthetic .

Head Veterinary

Dr David McKellar
BVScMRCVS.

With over 30 years in racetrack medicine, Dr. David McKellar is a leading Australian equine veterinarian, renowned for diagnosing complex lameness and respiratory conditions. He has dedicated his career to safeguarding the health and performance of many of the southern hemisphere’s finest thoroughbreds.

He heads Racetrack Vets in North East Victoria, using advanced diagnostics to optimise performance and welfare. Dr. McKellar has worked with legends like David Hayes, Bart Cummings and Mike Moroney, managing care for 200+ Group 1 winners, including multiple Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper champions. His team specialises in digital x-rays, ultrasounds and pre-sale endoscopic exams for weanling, yearling and Ready 2 Run sales.

Veterinarian

Dr Ashley Greeves
DVM

Ash, originally from the UK and raised in Hong Kong, moved to Melbourne in 2004 to study. A lifelong animal lover and horse rider, he completed a Bachelor of Arts and Science with honours in Equine Dentistry at Monash and Veterinary Studies at the University of Melbourne. He began his career in mixed practice in Traralgon, before specializing in standardbred reproduction in Kyabram, where he developed a passion for harness racing and co-bred four foals. Since 2022, Ash has been a valued member of the Racetrack Vets team.

Veterinarian

Dr Lisa Yates
BVetMed MRCVS.

Lisa completed her veterinary studies at the Royal Veterinary College of London.

Post graduating, she undertook work in Argentina at an embryo transfer centre, then completing an internship at a referral centre in Yorkshire.

Lisa has spent the last several years as head reproductive vet for major stud farms thought Victoria.

Lisa’s favourite areas of Veterinary medicine are reproduction and lameness

Veterinarian

DR Rafaella Hollanda

Email: rafaella@racetrackvet.com.au

Originally from Brazil, Rafaella completed her veterinary studies at Universidade Positivo in Curitiba.

Following graduation, she worked extensively with Thoroughbred racehorses in Brazil, providing veterinary care within the racing industry and high-performance training environments. She later moved to Australia to further her career in equine veterinary practice.

Rafaella has a particular interest in equine sports medicine.

​Practice Manager

Jorja Gammage

Raised on one of Western Australia’s leading breeding and racing studs, Jorja studied Agribusiness at Curtin University before gaining international experience in the UK and Ireland’s yearling divisions.

Returning to Australia, she worked with top studs including Tyreel, Widden, and Sun Stud, and later managed one of Victoria’s premier broodmare farms. Jorja brings extensive industry knowledge and a passion for racing.
